Snowfall intensifies, schools closed in 24 provinces (February 27, 2026 snow day)

As cold and snowy weather makes its presence felt once again across Turkey, decisions to close schools have come in succession, particularly from the Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, and Black Sea regions. Governorates and district governorships announced that education has been suspended in many provinces and districts, citing the safety of students and citizens as the reason.

VAN

Due to the heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions in Van, education has been suspended for one day throughout the province.

In a statement from the Governorate, it was reported that snowfall, icing, and fog continue to affect the entire city.

The statement noted that education has been suspended in all primary and secondary educational institutions, including high schools, public education centers, and special education and rehabilitation centers.

It was also noted that disabled and pregnant public personnel, as well as public employee mothers with children aged 0-6, will be considered on administrative leave.

TUNCELİ

In Tunceli, education has been suspended in some districts due to heavy snowfall.

The Governorate announced that education has been suspended in all schools in the Ovacık, Nazımiye, and Pülümür districts, and in schools under the scope of bused education in the Hozat district.

The statement included the following remarks:

“In line with the decisions taken by the District Public Health Boards, education has been suspended for 1 day on Friday, February 27, in all official and private formal and non-formal educational institutions in our Pülümür, Ovacık, and Nazımiye districts. In our Hozat district, bused education has been suspended for 1 day on the same date.”

ERZURUM

Erzurum Governor Aydın Baruş stated in a post on his social media account that the snowfall has intensified in the city.

Baruş included the following remarks in his statement:

"Due to the continued snowfall in our city and the formation of frost and icing on the roads caused by cold weather, education has been suspended for 1 day on Friday in all official and private kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, and high schools in our Aziziye, Palandöken, and Yakutiye districts. On the same date, our pregnant and disabled public personnel will also be considered on administrative leave for 1 day. Decisions regarding our other districts will be taken by our district governorships. I wish our teachers and students a good holiday."

CLASSES ONLINE AT TWO UNIVERSITIES

Meanwhile, measures have also been taken in higher education in Erzurum. It was announced that classes at Erzurum Technical University and Atatürk University will be held online on Friday due to heavy snowfall.

TRABZON

In Trabzon, education has been suspended in many districts due to snowfall and adverse weather conditions.

While education has been stopped in all schools in the Düzköy, Tonya, Çaykara, Maçka, and Dernekpazarı districts, education has been suspended in schools with bused education in the Hayrat, Vakfıkebir, Arsin, and Şalpazarı districts.

It was reported that education has also been suspended for one day in some schools in the high-altitude areas of the Yomra, Çarşıbaşı, and Araklı districts.

ORDU

The Ordu Governorate announced that education has been suspended in many districts due to heavy snowfall continuing in the inner parts of the city.

While education has been suspended in all schools in the Akkuş, Aybastı, Çamaş, Çaybaşı, Gölköy, Gürgentepe, Kabadüz, Kabataş, Korgan, Kumru, İkizce, Mesudiye, and Ulubey districts, bused education has been stopped in some schools in the Fatsa, Ünye, Perşembe, and Altınordu districts.

In Erzincan, education has been suspended throughout the province due to adverse weather conditions.

In a statement from the Governorate, it was stated that the snowfall has intensified across the city, and attention was drawn to transportation and traffic safety.

The statement included the following remarks:

"Considering the potential negative impacts on transportation and the risks to traffic safety, education has been suspended for 1 day on Friday, February 27, in all official and private formal and non-formal educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, Quran courses, and daycare centers, day care homes, and children's clubs affiliated with public institutions and organizations throughout our province."

GÜMÜŞHANE

In Gümüşhane, education has been suspended throughout the province due to the intermittent continuation of snowfall and falling temperatures.

In a statement from the Governorate, it was stated that the risk of icing is expected to increase in the morning hours.

"Additionally, pregnant, disabled, disabled, and personnel with severe chronic illnesses among public institution and organization employees, as well as female personnel whose children attend daycare, kindergarten, and primary school (the status of personnel working in health, security, or units providing 24-hour service will be evaluated by their respective unit heads), will be considered on administrative leave on Friday, February 27, 2026."

In Ağrı, education has been suspended throughout the province due to the heavy snowfall expected to be effective.

BİTLİS

In Bitlis, education has been suspended for one day throughout the province due to heavy snowfall and the risk of icing.

In the Governorate's statement, it was emphasized that the life safety of students and citizens is prioritized.

In Bingöl, education has been suspended in 5 districts due to snowfall.

According to the statement from the Governorate, schools were closed in the Adaklı, Karlıova, Kiğı, Yayladere, and Yedisu districts.

KAHRAMANMARAŞ

In the Elbistan, Ekinözü, Nurhak, Afşin, and Göksun districts of Kahramanmaraş, education has been suspended for one day due to snowfall and icing.
