The 4+4+4 impasse in education... Claims of a changing system: 3 new models emerge

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) has begun preparations for a new regulation regarding compulsory high school education. In the studies conducted to bring a more flexible structure to the 4-year compulsory high school model, alternative models are on the table that would lighten the course load and allow students to better adapt to the university preparation process.

IS A FLEXIBLE SYSTEM COMING?

According to a report by the Sabah newspaper, three different models are being considered to relax the compulsory nature of the final two years of the current 12-year compulsory education system, which is implemented as 4+4+4, specifically for the 11th and 12th grades. The goal is to both reduce the pressure of centralized exams on students and to diversify education according to individual preferences.

The 3 Models on the Table Are:

3+1 Model:

In this model, high school education is reduced to 3 years. The 12th grade is structured as a university preparation year. During this year, students will be able to focus more on the university entrance exam, and the curriculum will be simplified accordingly.

2+2 Model:

The basis of the model lies in dividing high school education into two stages. Students will be able to receive a high school diploma upon completing the 9th and 10th grades. Students who academically target university will continue their education in the 11th and 12th grades. In this way, those preparing for university and those with vocational orientations will be differentiated.

Age-Based Model:

According to this proposal, compulsory education will be restructured based on age. Students who have reached the age of 16 will be able to opt out of compulsory education if they wish. Alternatively, removing high school education from compulsory status entirely is also being discussed.

TO BE DISCUSSED ON THE CABINET AGENDA

The reform work in question is expected to be brought to the agenda at the Cabinet Meeting to be held in the coming days. The effects that these steps, which could lead to radical changes in education policies, will have on students, teachers, and parents will also be carefully evaluated.
