YÖK is reducing quotas for those departments
The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) will reduce quotas in programs that have lost their relevance and have a weakening link to employment. Additionally, a new model is being developed to allow undergraduate education to be completed in 3 years.
Council of Higher Education (YÖK) President Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar announced that efforts are ongoing regarding departments in universities that have lost their relevance and have a weakening link to employment.
Özvar stated that in the last three years, 175 programs have been removed from the system and the quotas for 443 programs have been reduced. This process is being carried out to make higher education programs at universities more aligned with current needs.
YÖK President Özvar announced that they will proceed with quota reductions in programs where student demand has decreased or where, according to sector data, a sufficient number of graduates has already been reached.
This year, foundation universities will also be included in this regulation. Özvar emphasized that changes will be made to the quotas of programs such as dentistry, pharmacy, faculties of education, law, psychology, and architecture. Stating, "We will apply the same quota reduction method we use in state universities to foundation universities this year," Özvar expressed that this regulation is an important step regarding university education.
NEW MODEL IN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION: TO BE COMPLETED IN 3 YEARS
Another significant change has come to the agenda in the field of higher education. Özvar announced that a new model is being worked on that will allow 4-year undergraduate education to be completed in 3 years. He stated that this model will not lead to any reduction in the total course load but will offer students a faster educational process. Using the expressions, "We are reorganizing the programs with a 3-semester logic within one year, starting in September and ending in July. Our students will still take the 8-semester course load, but they will be able to complete this process in 3 years," Özvar said that this model will be a system implemented for the first time in Turkey.
