Another election statement from the Palace: Mehmet Uçum announced the election date

Chief Advisor to the President and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, Mehmet Uçum, met with journalists at the Çankaya Mansion and made statements regarding the agenda.

According to the report by Nefes, Mehmet Uçum made an important statement regarding the upcoming elections, saying, "There are 18 months left until the elections," and noting that it has become largely clear that the election will be held in March or April 2028.

NEW CONSTITUTION

Stating that they discussed the new constitution agenda with the Minister of Justice as the Legal Policies Board, Uçum conveyed that work on the perspective, architecture, foundation, and principles of the new constitution's legal policy will continue. Noting that the need for a new constitution cannot be evaluated solely based on the expectations of politicians, Uçum stated in the continuation of his remarks that the demands and needs of the public must be taken as the basis.

Expressing that the demand for a new constitution in Turkey has been on the agenda for many years, Uçum said that the need for a new and civilian constitution has been discussed since 1987. Stating that political parties also promised a new constitution in past elections, Uçum expressed that a period has now been entered where concrete topics will be discussed.

Regarding the new constitution, Uçum used the phrase, "We can set October 1, 2026, as the start date for the drafting process of the new constitution."

'THE FINAL DECISION RESTS WITH OUR PARLIAMENT'

Saying, "At the point we have reached today, the era is now the Century of Turkey, and the time is now the time for a new constitution," Uçum stated, "The possibility of drafting a new constitution during the remaining period of the 28th term of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) is also a matter for our Parliament to evaluate. This possibility can never be excluded, but in this period, the subject may likely remain at the level of building intellectual maturity regarding the fundamental approaches of the new constitution. Even this would be an important step forward."

In the continuation of his remarks, Uçum assessed, "However, after the 2028 elections, that is, in the 29th term of the Parliament, the adoption of the new constitution with the broadest consensus and its submission to the approval of the public can be expressed as an inevitable step. Of course, the final decision rests with the democratic political leadership and our Parliament."
