10 gut-friendly foods
Gut health is of vital importance for our overall health and quality of life. A balanced diet, adequate fiber intake, and probiotic sources strengthen our digestive system while also supporting our immune system. The balance of the gut flora can affect many processes, from our mood to our immune responses. Regular exercise, drinking enough water, and stress management also play a major role in having healthy intestines. Remember, a healthy digestive system is the foundation of a healthy life. Here are 10 foods that are good for gut health:
1- Carbohydrates
Foods such as whole wheat bread, bulgur, oats, chickpeas, dried beans, and kidney beans increase bowel movements due to their high fiber content, allowing digested food to pass through the large intestine more quickly. This prevents toxic substances from remaining in the large intestine for a long time, thereby preventing the formation of harmful bacteria and protecting a healthy gut flora. Make sure to consume complex, i.e., whole grain, carbohydrate sources every day; also, do not neglect to include legumes at least two days a week.
2- Kefir
Probiotic foods support the beneficial bacteria in our intestines, balancing the gut flora and helping the digestive system function healthily. Furthermore, they contribute to the body's detoxification by preventing the reabsorption of toxic substances. Thanks to these probiotic properties, kefir plays an important role in maintaining gut health. If you do not have an allergy or intolerance to dairy products, consuming 200 ml (one glass) of kefir daily will be quite beneficial.
3- Yogurt
Yogurt is a food source packed with beneficial bacteria. Thanks to the probiotics it contains, it balances the digestive system and provides protection against many health issues such as constipation, diarrhea, and immune system-related ailments. Do not forget to consume at least two bowls of yogurt every day; this is a simple yet effective way to support your health.
4- Pickles
While pickles support gut flora with their rich probiotic content, their high fiber content helps stool pass through the intestines more quickly. With these properties, they contribute to maintaining digestive health. However, due to their high sodium content, individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or stomach ailments may need to consume pickles with caution or avoid them entirely. Consumption of this food should be considered based on individual health conditions.
5- Omega 3
Omega 3 helps beneficial bacteria in the body multiply, creating a balanced gut flora. Do not miss out on salmon, which is rich in omega 3, two or three times a week. You can prepare salmon in a healthy way by grilling or baking it.
6- Coconut
Research conducted in recent years reveals that the medium-chain fatty acids contained in coconut oil place less of a burden on the body during the digestive process compared to long-chain fatty acids, and that this facilitates digestion. Furthermore, coconut oil also possesses anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. In this way, it has been shown that it can provide protection against inflammatory bowel diseases by helping to eliminate harmful microorganisms. For these reasons, coconut oil is among the foods that support gut health.
7- Spinach
Spinach is one of the foods beneficial for gut health. As a dark leafy green vegetable, spinach helps increase the population of beneficial bacteria in the gut thanks to the specific types of sugars it contains. These beneficial bacteria use the sugars in spinach as an energy source and secrete an enzyme. Thus, by increasing the number of bacteria friendly to our body, it contributes to balancing our gut flora.
8- Apple
The apple is a fruit that draws attention with its high nutritional value and helps regulate stomach and intestinal movements thanks to the soluble fibers it contains. A diet rich in fiber is extremely important for maintaining a healthy gut flora. An apple contains approximately 20 percent fiber. Therefore, do not forget to consume at least one apple every day.
9- Banana
A healthy gut flora requires a well-functioning digestive system. Issues such as constipation and diarrhea negatively affect gut flora, reducing the number of beneficial bacteria and potentially leading to absorption problems. Thanks to the fiber it contains, the banana regulates the digestive system and helps prevent such issues. If you have digestive problems or indigestion, you should choose ripe bananas. Unripe (green) bananas make digestion more difficult and can increase discomfort such as gas.
10- Raw Almonds
A study conducted in 2016 revealed that positive changes in gut bacteria were observed in children and adolescents who consumed almonds compared to those who did not. Furthermore, it was found that thanks to the fiber content in almonds, they create positive effects on the gut microbiota and help increase the number of beneficial bacteria by providing them with nutrients (prebiotic effect). A healthy microbiota means healthy gut function. Therefore, do not forget to consume 10-12 raw almonds every day.
