Statement from IYI Party on Van! 'Elections should be repeated'

IYI Party Antalya Deputy Uğur Poyraz stated that the cancellation of the eligibility rights of DEM Party mayoral candidate Abdullah Zeydan, who won the Van Metropolitan Municipality election, and the awarding of the certificate of election to the AKP candidate, is unacceptable.

It was stated that the decision regarding the cancellation of the rights of Zeydan, who won the Van Metropolitan Municipality with 55.51 percent of the vote in the March 31 Local Administration General Elections, was turned in favor of the AKP candidate Abdulahat Arvas, who received 27.15 percent of the vote.

Emphasizing that respect for the will of the voters is essential for democracy and the rule of law, Poyraz drew attention to the legal errors made in the Van Metropolitan Municipality elections and the fact that the process of restoring a candidate's banned rights by the court was neglected.

Poyraz noted the following:

“The decision made is indisputably wrong. The 'written order' application made by the Public Prosecutor is also correct in terms of legal technique, both procedurally and in content. While the responsibility of the YSK (Supreme Election Council), which consists of judges, and its affiliated election boards is to examine the legal status of candidates and make decisions regarding their applications accordingly, it is understood that they did not perform their duties properly in this case. As a result, the disregard for the will of the voters in our province of Van is due to the negligence and failure of the Court and the Election Board to fulfill their responsibilities.”

"IT IS A USURPATION OF VOTER WILL"

Since the area in which the current government and its cadres specialize is public tenders, they are looking for a solution to this problem that emerged in the elections using the same practices as in tenders. Ignoring the will of the voters and giving the certificate of election to the candidate who received the second-highest number of votes, as if awarding a tender to the second-best bidder, is a usurpation of the voter's will.

CALLED FOR THE ELECTION TO BE REPEATED

Our legal opinion is that the mistakes made by the judicial body cannot be instrumentalized to eliminate the will of the voters. Therefore, the Metropolitan Mayoral elections in Van must be repeated. Parties should compete again with candidates who have the qualifications to enter the election. Everyone should accept the resulting outcome as a requirement of democracy."
