Police intervene in lawyers' 'Van' protest at Çağlayan Courthouse: Persistence pays off

In the March 31 Local Elections, after the Ministry of Justice revoked the banned rights of DEM Party candidate Abdullah Zeydan, who won the elections in Van, his certificate of election was given to AKP candidate Abdulahat Arvas.

As lawyers brought the issue to the Istanbul Courthouse, the Kağıthane District Governorship banned all kinds of meetings, protest marches, and press statements as the area falls within its jurisdiction. Upon this, the lawyers entered the Çağlayan Courthouse, which is located within the borders of the Şişli district, and wanted to make their statement there. However, police intervention began as soon as the lawyers started reading their press statement.

'COURTHOUSE' PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF

The lawyers' persistence in entering the courthouse building paid off. The lawyers, who waited at the courthouse door for a while, were later allowed into the building. After the intervention, lawyers who wanted to enter the courthouse building were not permitted. As the lawyers entered the courthouse, riot police were also brought into the courthouse building.
