Women to govern 11 of 81 provinces! A woman's touch for Izmir...

Following the March 31 Local Elections, the profiles of the winning candidates have begun to take shape.

Accordingly, the rate of female candidates in the 2019 local elections was 7.89 percent, and by the end of the elections held on that date, female mayors had been elected in 4 of the 81 provinces. This number rose to 11 as of Sunday evening.

According to the report by Sibel Gülersöyler from Haber Global; AK Party candidate Fatma Şahin in Gaziantep, CHP candidate Candan Yüceer in Tekirdağ, CHP candidate Filiz Gencan Akın in Edirne, CHP candidate Özlem Çerçioğlu in Aydın, CHP candidate Burcu Köksal in Afyonkarahisar, CHP candidate Ayşe Ünlüce in Eskişehir, CHP candidate Melek Mızrak Subaşı in Bilecik, DEM Party candidate Ayşe Serra Bucak Küçük in Diyarbakır, DEM Party candidate Sofya Alağaş in Siirt, DEM Party candidate Gülüstan Sönük in Batman, and DEM Party candidate Hazal Aras in Ağrı were the names who crossed the finish line in the elections.

3 DISTRICTS IN ISTANBUL

Following the local election results, female candidates won 3 out of 39 districts in Istanbul. CHP's Ayşegül Özdemir Ovalıoğlu, who is a brain surgeon, received 67 percent of the votes in Bakırköy. The CHP had received 56 percent of the votes in Bakırköy in the previous election.

Architect Esin Köymen, whom the CHP nominated for the Maltepe Mayoralty, also became the first female candidate to win the mayoral race in the district. Köymen completed the election race with 58 percent.

In Üsküdar, one of the districts where the election competition was fierce in Istanbul, ship engineer Sinem Dedetaş, who was the CHP candidate, was elected by receiving 49 percent of the votes. The CHP took Üsküdar, which it lost by a margin of 9 thousand votes in the last elections, from the AK Party with a margin of 23 thousand votes.

8 WOMEN WILL GOVERN IZMIR

Ankara's only female mayor was AK Party candidate for Akyurt district, Hilal Ayık. Ayık is also a software engineer. In Izmir, women won 8 of its 30 districts.

Lal Denizli in Çeşme, Saniye Fıçı in Foça, Emine Helil İnay Kınay in Karabağlar, İlkay Girgin Erdoğan in Karaburun, Behice Yıldız Ünsal in Karşıyaka, Sema Bodur in Kınık, Nilüfer Çınarlı Mutlu in Konak, and Filiz Ceritoğlu in Selçuk managed to leave their rivals behind in the elections. All of the candidates are from the CHP. In the Seyhan district of Adana, CHP candidate Oya Tekin was elected mayor. Tekin became the only female mayor to win in Adana.

3 WOMEN IN ANTALYA

In Antalya, 3 of the total 30 districts will be entrusted to women. While Saniye Caran from Korkuteli and İlkay Akca from Akseki were elected from the CHP, the name elected from the İbradi district was AK Party candidate Hatice Sekmen.

THANKS TO THE GREAT LEADER

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic, implemented the law that gave Turkish women the right to participate in municipal elections starting in 1930, and subsequently the right to become village headmen, and to vote and be elected as members of parliament.

These rights were recognized with the legal amendment made to the Constitution and the Election Law on December 5, 1934. Turkish women gained the right to vote and be elected 11 years before French women, 14 years before Belgian women, and a full 36 years before Swiss women. Since that day, women have continued to take part in every field. In the March 31, 2024 Local Elections, women managed to break the record in the history of the Republic.
