A cold wave originating from Siberia has taken Istanbul under its influence. According to statements from the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) and the Turkish State Meteorological Service, snowfall will continue for three more days and will increase in intensity, especially on Friday and Saturday.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu stated that the snowfall would turn into a blizzard in the afternoon and that temperatures would drop even further in the evening hours. İmamoğlu urged citizens not to go out unless necessary and to prefer public transportation for travel.
According to AKOM data, snow depths will vary by region:
In central districts south of the E-5: 5 to 15 cm
In regions north of the E-5: 15 to 25 cm
In high-altitude areas and northern regions: 30 to 40 cm
Meanwhile, the use of motorcycles, scooters, and motorcycle couriers in traffic has been banned across Istanbul until further notice. Authorities are calling on citizens to be cautious against icing and frost until Monday morning.
