AKOM issues warning with specific days and times: Snow is coming to Istanbul! Siberian cold to grip the mega-city...

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has announced that the city will face heavy snowfall in the coming days. It was stated that the precipitation, expected to be effective on Wednesday and Thursday, could increase snow depth to between 10 and 20 centimeters in some regions. Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing, increasing the risk of icing and frost.

SIBERIAN COLD TO GRIP ISTANBUL

According to AKOM's weather forecast report, air temperatures, which have been hovering around seasonal norms until the weekend, will drop rapidly as of Monday, February 3, due to a cold air wave coming from Siberia. While snowfall is expected to begin on Wednesday, February 5, with an accumulation of 1 to 5 centimeters, it is estimated that a snow cover of 10 to 20 centimeters could form on Thursday, February 6, as the precipitation intensifies.

TEMPERATURES TO DROP BELOW FREEZING, ICING DANGER TO INCREASE

While temperatures are expected to drop below 0 degrees starting Wednesday, it is stated that frost events will increase further on Thursday. It was reported that temperatures will range between 1 and 5 degrees on Friday, but the danger of icing and frost will persist.

IMPORTANT WARNINGS FOR CITIZENS

AKOM has called on Istanbul residents to be cautious against the risk of icing and frost. It was stated that precautions should be taken against negative conditions such as fog, hoarfrost, and slippery surfaces during morning and night hours, and it was advised to avoid using private vehicles unless necessary due to potential disruptions in transportation. Furthermore, it is predicted that temperatures across the city will fall below seasonal norms starting February 2 and that this situation will continue until February 10.

Authorities emphasized that drivers should use winter tires and obey traffic rules, while noting that citizens should be prepared for emergencies.
