AKOM sets the date: Temperatures to drop in Istanbul, heavy downpours on the way

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Disaster Affairs and Risk Management (AKOM) has issued a warning for heavy downpours in Istanbul starting from the middle of the week. According to the forecast report dated September 14, 2026, the city has come under the influence of cool and rainy weather arriving from the Balkans.

The report states that partly to very cloudy weather will prevail throughout the week in Istanbul, with temperatures expected to range between 22 and 24 degrees, remaining below seasonal norms. Winds are expected to blow from the northwest (Karayel) and northeast (Poyraz) at speeds of 10 to 30 kilometers per hour, with humidity levels fluctuating between 45 and 80 percent.

According to the forecasts, no precipitation is expected in the city on Tuesday, September 15; the weather will be partly cloudy. On Wednesday, September 16, very cloudy and intermittently rainy weather is anticipated. On this day, 2 to 5 kilograms of precipitation per square meter is expected.

The most significant rainfall of the week is expected on Thursday, September 17. AKOM announced that with the downpours on Thursday, 10 to 20 kilograms of precipitation per square meter could fall. On Friday, September 18, the weather is expected to turn partly cloudy following short-term rain in the morning hours.

The rainy system is expected to leave Istanbul as of Friday, with temperatures projected to rise again over the weekend. No precipitation is forecast for the weekend, with temperatures expected to climb to 26 degrees on Saturday and 27 degrees on Sunday. AKOM has urged citizens to be cautious against potential negative impacts, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.
