Call from NGOs for Lake Sapanca: 'It will directly affect human health'
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have appealed to authorities for the protection and sustainability of Lake Sapanca, which serves as a drinking water source for Sakarya and Kocaeli. Representatives stated that urgent actions and long-term strategies must be established.
Sakarya and Kocaeli's drinking water source, Lake Sapanca, has brought NGOs together following a recent fuel leak and environmental pollution caused by various factors.
NGO representatives gathered at the fairgrounds in Kırkpınar Neighborhood and issued a joint call for the protection and sustainability of the lake.
"URGENT ACTIONS AND LONG-TERM STRATEGIES..."
Speaking on behalf of the group, Osman Kubilay, President of the Sapanca Tradesmen and Craftsmen Credit and Bailment Cooperative, said the following:
"Lake Sapanca is not just a water source; it is also an indispensable source of life for the health of the people and living creatures in the surrounding area. Any environmental disaster that may occur in the lake will directly affect the ecosystem and human health.
Therefore, it is necessary to determine urgent actions and long-term strategies for the protection of the lake and the prevention of pollution. Our city's administrators and relevant institutions need to develop a more effective crisis management strategy, take preventive measures, and continuously inform the public regarding this matter."
CALL TO CITIZENS LIVING AROUND THE LAKE
"It is of great importance that our people living around the lake are sensitive during this process and take the necessary precautions to protect the environment. Furthermore, the use of water for industrial purposes also has a significant impact on the sustainability of the lake. Inspecting wastewater from industrial facilities and using appropriate treatment systems is of critical importance for the protection of the lake and its surroundings.
In addition, substances containing heavy chemical metals originating from the transportation network surrounding the lake must be examined in detail and necessary precautions must be taken.
"WE INVITE ALL STAKEHOLDERS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY"
The sustainability of Lake Sapanca is important for coping with today's greatest environmental and climatic challenges. In the face of problems such as global warming and drought, sustainable policies must be adopted and implemented in the management of the lake. This is a vital step toward leaving a clean and healthy environment for future generations.
We invite all stakeholders to take responsibility and make a joint effort for the protection and sustainability of Lake Sapanca. We must act together to leave a clean and healthy environment for future generations and we must not shy away from taking the necessary steps to protect Lake Sapanca."
