EU regulation to reduce packaging waste

EP members adopted the report that forms the parliament's mandate for negotiations with EU countries. 426 members voted in favor, 125 against, and 74 abstained.

With the regulation intended to be enacted, the EP aims to reduce packaging, restrict certain types, and ban the use of "forever chemicals."

The regulation targets a 5% reduction in general packaging by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040. For plastic packaging, targets are set at 10% by 2030, 15% by 2035, and 20% by 2040.

BAN REQUESTED

Furthermore, a ban on the sale of very lightweight plastic bags under 15 microns is being requested. It is also proposed to severely restrict the use of single-use packaging for products like soap and shampoo used in hotels, as well as plastic films used for wrapping luggage at airports.

The use of "forever chemicals" known as "PFAS" and the substance Bisphenol A in food-contact packaging is being requested to be banned.

The aim is for distributors of beverages and packaged foods in the food sector, such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes, to offer consumers the option to bring their own containers.

For the regulation proposal to be implemented, the EP and the Council of the EU, which consists of EU countries, must reach a consensus.
