An extremely hot summer is coming to Turkey: El Nino effect raises alarms

A major shift in climate systems is on the horizon globally. The El Nino weather phenomenon, which emerges due to rising sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, is preparing to directly affect Turkey. It is estimated that temperatures will rise well above seasonal norms and weather conditions will be harsher than expected.

Experts point out that after the La Nina period, which was punctuated by the effects of global warming in recent years, El Nino will be felt more strongly. Different regions of Turkey may be exposed to abnormal heat and various weather events during this period.

Dr. Okan Bozyurt evaluated current ocean data and recent meteorological observations. While stating that "2026 could be the hottest summer in recent years," Bozyurt emphasized that the Southeastern Anatolia, Mediterranean coasts, Southwestern Aegean, and Central Anatolia regions would be the most affected by the extreme heat. He also said that temperatures are expected to remain well above the usual levels during the winter months as well.

Emphasizing that El Nino is not limited to just hot weather, climate scientists explained that the accumulation of heat will load extra energy into the atmosphere, which could trigger unusual weather conditions such as unexpected storms, hail, and sudden downpours. Dr. Bozyurt recalled the severe flood experienced in Bartın during the 'Super El Nino' process in 1997-1998, stating that all of Turkey, especially the Black Sea region, must be prepared for similar risks this year.

In conclusion, it is predicted that the approaching El Nino will challenge temperature records across the country and present a picture very different from typical summer seasons. Experts warn citizens to be cautious against both extreme heat and potential sudden weather changes.
