Hunting ban lifted on Paşalimanı Island: Wildlife and ecosystem at risk
Rabbit and partridge hunting has been permitted on Paşalimanı Island for a period of three months. Island representatives and residents have objected to the lifting of the ban and are demanding that it be reinstated in next year's planning to protect the ecosystem.
In accordance with a decision taken for Paşalimanı Island, rabbit and partridge hunting has been permitted on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays for a period of 3 months. The decision was put into effect with the approval of the District Governorship and relevant institutions.
During a meeting attended by island headmen, association presidents, the Kapıdağ Hunters Association, and Agriculture and Forestry officials, island representatives requested that the hunting ban be maintained. However, despite all objections, a decision was made to lift the ban.
MAJOR THREAT TO WILDLIFE
Paşalimanı Island stands out as one of the Marmara Region's significant locations in terms of natural and biological diversity. It has been stated that permitting rabbit and partridge hunting could have negative impacts on wildlife and the ecosystem.
Island residents and representatives announced that they will make an official application to have the hunting ban reinstated next year for the sake of nature conservation.
In a statement made to the public, it was said, "As those who care about the future of Paşalimanı Island, we demand that this decision be reconsidered. Protecting natural life is not just the responsibility of islanders, but the common responsibility of the entire country. We need public support to bring back the hunting ban."
A CALL FOR THE FUTURE OF THE ECOSYSTEM
Island representatives emphasized that the decision carries risks for the protection of wildlife and the ecosystem on the island. It was stated that efforts must be made to ensure the sustainability of natural life on Paşalimanı Island with the support of the community and the public.
