Microzonation studies completed in 23 provinces to 'ensure the establishment of disaster-resilient cities'

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change continues its efforts to accurately identify residential areas and determine zones suitable for construction against potential disaster risks. In this context, microzonation surveys are conducted by the General Directorate of Spatial Planning before residential areas are designated, and the suitability of these areas for construction is evaluated.

STUDIES CONTINUE IN TUNCELİ

Following the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, microzonation studies were completed in 23 provinces, including Hatay, Malatya, Bingöl, Düzce, and Kocaeli, covering an area of approximately 200 thousand hectares. Additionally, one of the microzonation studies aimed at building disaster-resilient cities is ongoing in Tunceli.

In Tunceli, which is located on active fault lines and where 1,700 structures were heavily damaged in the earthquakes, microzonation studies are being carried out over an area of 6,200 hectares. Through these studies conducted at 8 separate locations, disaster risks in the districts are being identified, and the boundaries of areas prone to landslides and rockfalls are being determined.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum also stated in a post on his social media account, "We are identifying safe residential areas through microzonation studies in risky regions for disaster-resilient cities. Furthermore, we are strengthening our building stock by constructing new buildings with TOKİ."
