Pollution in Uzungöl, which previously made headlines with photos showing surrounding construction, saddens onlookers

Trabzon's Çaykara district, home to the world-famous tourism center Uzungöl, which is a frequent destination for thousands of local and foreign tourists, often made headlines with photographs showing the construction surrounding it.

In addition to this image revealing the destruction of nature, the latest footage from Uzungöl has saddened those who saw it.

While water levels in natural wonder tourism lakes have decreased in recent years, sediment transport, mud, and algae growth have increased on lake beds, alongside pollution. Uzungöl has also been affected by this.

Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş issued the following warnings in a statement he made two months ago:

“Lakes also complete their lifespans. There are 3 fundamental factors in the completion of a lake's lifespan. One of these is the increase in sediment entering the lake over time, which causes the lake to become shallower. Another is evaporation due to climate change. Another factor is the importance people place on the environment and the pollution of the lake. With increased evaporation, pollution, and the growth of algae in the water, the life within the lake will completely disappear, and the lakes will eventually become shallower and turn into swamps. Two lakes stand out in Trabzon's lake tourism. One of them is Sera Lake, and the other is Uzungöl. These lakes, which are over a century old, have now started to sound the alarm. In other words, they are becoming shallower, getting polluted, and showing us that they are reaching the end of their lifespans.”
