Protest in Bursa against red deer hunting tender with deer costume: 'It is about life as a whole'

Environmental and animal rights advocates gathered in Bursa for a joint press statement against the red deer hunting tender. A participant wearing a deer costume and signs reading "Do not kill me" drew attention during the protest.

Melike Baysal, President of the Bursa Chamber of Veterinarians, stated in her address that their objections were not limited to a single hunting tender, emphasizing that Bursa's forests, water, soil, and wildlife must be protected.

We are here today not only to object to a hunting tender; we are here to defend Bursa's forests, water, soil, wildlife, and our shared future. Because we know that the issue is not just a red deer; the issue is life as a whole.

Baysal expressed that nature cannot be evaluated through economic terms, stating that viewing a living creature's life as a source of income is the result of a mindset that treats nature merely as a resource. She stated that nature is not a "commodity to be bought, sold, or auctioned," but life itself.

Addressing the environmental problems Bursa faces, Baysal noted that the expansion of new organized industrial zones is shrinking fertile agricultural lands, fragmenting forest ecosystems, and reducing the habitats of wild animals. She noted that mining activities, quarries, and uncontrolled construction are increasing the pressure on natural areas.

EMPHASIS ON 'ONE HEALTH'

Stating that human, animal, and environmental health cannot be considered separately, Baysal pointed to the globally accepted "One Health" approach. She stated that healthy humans can only live with healthy animals, and healthy animals can only live in healthy ecosystems.

Expressing that the red deer is an indispensable part of the forest ecosystem, Baysal said the species contributes to the regeneration of the forest and the maintenance of biological diversity. According to Baysal, defending the right to life of the red deer also means defending the ecological balance.

Touching upon examples of living in harmony with nature in Bursa, Baysal recalled the Yaren the Stork example, stating that it is possible to produce and develop in harmony instead of fighting against nature.

True wealth is not the natural resources we consume; it is the natural heritage we can protect. Protecting nature is not a romantic choice; it is an economic, ecological, and social necessity. Nature is not an inheritance from our ancestors, but a trust from our children. We must protect Bursa with this awareness of stewardship.
