Why was the loss of life limited in the major Kamchatka earthquake?
The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on the Kamchatka Peninsula drew attention due to the low loss of life. Prof. Dr. Naci Görür attributed this to earthquake-resistant cities.
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made significant assessments on social media following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
Görür emphasized that despite the magnitude of the earthquake, the limited loss of life and destruction were due to earthquake-resistant construction in the region.
In his statement, Görür said, "One of the largest earthquakes of the last century occurred in Kamchatka today.
However, death and destruction remained extremely limited. This situation once again highlights the importance of earthquake-resistant cities.
Countries like Japan, Russia, and America prioritize this type of construction in earthquake zones. We must adopt a similar approach," he stated.
Pointing out that if a similar earthquake were to occur in Turkey, there could be heavy losses, Görür said, "We do not want places just to put a roof over our heads; we want places where our safety is ensured."
These statements have reignited debates in Turkey regarding earthquake safety.
