A major danger among youth: The age of onset has dropped to 15!

Acıbadem International Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Prof. Dr. Ferda Özdemir explained the underlying causes of the increasing number of lumbar disc herniation cases among young people.

Özdemir stated that according to 2022 data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the prevalence of lumbar region disorders in individuals aged 15 and over is 29.7 percent. Furthermore, it was stated that in a study conducted on women aged 15-49, 67.5 percent of those experiencing lower back pain were diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation.

INACTIVITY AND INCORRECT EXERCISE HABITS CREATE RISK

Prof. Dr. Özdemir stated that the increasingly common sedentary lifestyle among young people is one of the primary causes of lumbar disc herniation and issued the following warning:

"Remaining inactive for long periods in front of tablets, phones, and computers, and sitting in a hunched or slouched position puts serious pressure on the spine."

Weight training, which has become particularly popular among young people, also carries risks. Pointing out that weightlifting exercises performed with incorrect technique can have negative effects on spinal health, Özdemir emphasized the importance of warming up before sports and seeking expert support.

OBESITY, STRESS, AND SMOKING ARE ALSO INFLUENTIAL

Other elements of modern life also trigger lumbar disc herniation. Obesity, being under constant stress, and smoking are among the other significant factors increasing lumbar disc herniation in young people.

PAY ATTENTION TO THESE SYMPTOMS!

Lumbar disc herniation occurs when the discs between the vertebrae put pressure on the nerves. Symptoms such as lower back pain that begins after a sudden or strenuous movement, pain that increases with coughing or sneezing, and numbness and weakness spreading to the legs can indicate a lumbar disc herniation.

NON-SURGICAL SOLUTION IS POSSIBLE

Contrary to popular belief, only 5-10 percent of patients with lumbar disc herniation require surgical intervention. The vast majority can regain their health through medication, physical therapy, and regular exercise.

Prof. Dr. Ferda Özdemir drew attention to the importance of early diagnosis and said:

"Thanks to exercises, the muscles that support the spine are strengthened, and nerve pressure is reduced. This allows the pain to be significantly alleviated."

However, she also reminded that the disease can recur if habits such as poor posture, inactivity, and unconscious weightlifting continue.

DO THESE TO PROTECT YOURSELF

Experts offer the following recommendations to protect against lumbar disc herniation:

REGULAR EXERCISE

Inactivity is one of the most important factors in the development of lumbar disc herniation. Keep your body more vigorous and protect yourself from lumbar disc herniation with regular and correct exercise movements.

PAY ATTENTION TO CORRECT SITTING AND LIFTING TECHNIQUES!

If you spend time at home during the day or have a job where you sit constantly, it is worth taking a look at how you sit.

These irregular and prolonged sitting positions, which we often adopt without realizing, can cause us to apply extra pressure to our spine and lead to lower back pain over time.

When lifting loads, avoid carrying items that could harm your body alone and with sudden movements.

STRENGTHENING THE MUSCLES THAT SUPPORT THE SPINE

By adding movements that can strengthen your spine to your regular exercises, you can protect your spinal health and thus protect yourself from ailments such as lumbar disc herniation.

WEIGHT CONTROL AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HABITS

We all now know the importance of a balanced and regular diet for body health.

You can identify your problems by measuring your body mass index, and by adopting healthy lifestyle habits and maintaining your body balance, you can protect yourself from many diseases, especially joint and rheumatic diseases.
