Ahmet Ercan reveals the worst-case scenario following Aegean Sea earthquakes: Volcanic eruption risk

Recent increases in earthquakes in the Aegean Sea over the last few weeks have caused great concern on the Greek islands of Santorini and Amorgos.

Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan explained that the earthquakes could be linked to volcanic activity and that this situation could lead to a magnitude 7 earthquake and tsunami risk.

RUMBLINGS FROM UNDERGROUND CAUSE FEAR

Two earthquakes measuring 4.8 and 4.7 occurred in the Aegean Sea. According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), these earthquakes took place at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The tremors were felt in settlements across the region, particularly in Santorini, Amorgos, and the Cyclades. The continuous small tremors and rumblings coming from underground are being interpreted by the public as a harbinger of a major earthquake.

RISK OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION ON THE AGENDA

Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated that the earthquakes in the region could be linked to volcanic activity.

Ercan stated that the worst-case scenario could be an eruption of ash, rocks, and lava accompanying a volcanic explosion. He warned that such an eruption could trigger an earthquake of magnitude 5 to 7, which in turn could create a tsunami danger throughout the Aegean.

TSUNAMI WARNING FOR AEGEAN COASTS

According to Prof. Dr. Ercan, a potential major earthquake or volcanic eruption could create tsunami waves in the Aegean Sea.

It is noted that these waves could affect the coasts of Santorini, Amorgos, Crete, Greece, and Turkey.
