The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred in the central district of Bitlis.
Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan issued notable warnings via X.
Ercan noted the following:
Two small earthquakes with a magnitude of M4.3 occurred in İçlikavak, Hizan, Bitlis, at 05:50 and 05:56, with a 6-minute interval, at a focal depth of 5 km. Hizan is in a first-degree earthquake zone.
The force that strains and shakes the ground comes from the Arabian Shield, which pushes from the south to the north, and the Bitlis Thrust Belt that it forms.
The largest earthquake ever recorded in Bitlis was the M6.4 earthquake in 1582.
It would be surprising if a larger earthquake followed the M4.3.
However, we will wait and see. As a precaution, it would be best if the people of Hizan did not use their homes today.
