Bad news for women: Chocolate may trigger period pain
It has been revealed that chocolate, which is frequently preferred by women during their menstrual period, may further trigger period pain.
Stating that menstrual pain can be periodic and usually lasts between 1-3 days, Anadolu Health Center Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ulubay made noteworthy remarks.
Ulubay stated, "Contrary to popular belief, chocolate, which is frequently consumed by women during their menstrual period, can actually increase pain. Therefore, it is important to avoid caffeinated foods and drinks with high simple sugar content, especially chocolate, during this time."
Ulubay also shared ways to alleviate menstrual pain:
Regular exercise and stretching movements play an effective role in relieving menstrual pain.
Abdominal massage
Pelvic massage can be performed to help reduce pain by relaxing the muscles.
Herbal teas
Calming herbal teas such as linden can help alleviate menstrual pain.
Heat applications
To reduce the discomfort caused by menstrual cramps, you can take a warm bath or place a hot water bottle on your abdominal area.
Nutrition
It is necessary to avoid foods such as carbonated drinks, soda, chocolate, and cheese, as they can intensify menstrual pain.
Rest
During periods of unbearable pain, one can rest by lying in a fetal position in a warm, dark, and quiet room.
If the pain does not subside despite applying these methods, it is essential to consult an obstetrician and gynecologist.
