The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) has published its province-based banking data for the first quarter of 2025. With the released data, the regional distribution of foreign currency deposit accounts in Turkey has also become clear.
Across Turkey, the ratio of foreign currency deposit accounts within total deposits showed an increase compared to the previous quarter. The rate, which was 37.3 percent in the last quarter of 2024, rose to 37.6 percent in the first quarter of 2025. In the same period of the previous year, this rate was at the 35.1 percent level.
When viewed in terms of total foreign currency amount, Istanbul, Turkey's largest financial center, took the lead by a wide margin. The Turkish Lira equivalent of foreign currency deposits in the city reached 3.24 trillion TL. This figure constitutes the majority of the total foreign currency across Turkey. On the other hand, the province with the lowest foreign currency deposits was Ardahan with 1.25 billion TL.
In terms of proportional foreign currency wealth, Aksaray took the first place. In Aksaray, 48.8 percent of total deposits consisted of foreign currency accounts. With this rate, Aksaray has become Turkey's province that "trusts foreign currency the most." Aksaray was followed by Bingöl with 47.2 percent and Elazığ with 46.7 percent.
