Drivers in Europe are moving away from electric cars: Hybrid sales are on the rise

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has released new car registration data for EU countries for the month of July. According to the data, new car sales in EU countries rose by 0.2 percent last month compared to the same month in 2023, reaching 852 thousand 51 units.

It has been determined that 33.4% of new cars sold in member countries of the union are gasoline-powered, 32% are hybrid, 12.6% are diesel, 12.1% are electric, 6.8% are plug-in hybrid, and 3.1% are vehicles using other fuel types.

Electric vehicle sales fell by 10.8 percent in July compared to the same period last year, dropping to 102,705. In the same period last year, the share of electric vehicles in total sales was at 13.5 percent. The decline in the share of electric vehicles in total sales drew attention.

New car sales in July fell by 2.1 percent in Germany and 2.3 percent in France compared to the same period last year, while they increased by 3.4 percent in Spain and 4.7 percent in Italy. In the January-July period, total sales increased by 3.9 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 6 million 537 thousand 362.

According to manufacturers, the Volkswagen Group recorded the highest number of new car sales in the EU in July, with 229,387 vehicles. The Volkswagen Group was followed by the Stellantis Group.

The Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen, and Opel, sold 137 thousand 12 automobiles. The Renault Group ranked third with 88 thousand 707 new automobiles, while the Hyundai Group ranked fourth with 74 thousand 724 new automobiles.
