Funeral ceremony held for police officer martyred in Ümraniye

Yunus Emre G. (19), who was taken into custody at the Dudullu Police Station in connection with a motorcycle theft and was found to have a criminal record of 26 separate offenses, escaped from the station.

A police officer on duty at the station, K.H.S., and police officer Şeyda Yılmaz pursued the fleeing suspect to apprehend him.

The suspect, Yunus Emre G., was apprehended following a short pursuit, during which a scuffle broke out.

As a result of the suspect seizing a police officer's weapon and firing into the surroundings, Şeyda Yılmaz was critically wounded in the head.

In the incident, Yılmaz, police officer K.H.S., and the suspect's mother, P.G. (43), who was at the scene, were injured.

Police officer Yılmaz passed away at the hospital where he was taken following the intervention of medical teams.

FUNERAL CEREMONY HELD

A funeral ceremony was held for police officer Şeyda Yılmaz, who was martyred.

The ceremony held at the Istanbul Police Department's headquarters on Vatan Street was attended by the martyr's wife, police officer Semih Yılmaz, and his family, as well as Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, Fatih Mayor Mehmet Ergün Turan, Istanbul Provincial Police Chief Zafer Aktaş, and his colleagues.

In his speech at the ceremony, Police Chief Aktaş extended his condolences to the martyr's family, relatives, and the police force.

Aktaş stated that 27-year-old martyred police officer Şeyda Yılmaz had been on the force for one year, and that she was wounded and taken to the hospital as a result of a heroic struggle with the suspect during an operation to apprehend the fugitive.

Stating that Yılmaz could not be saved despite all interventions and was martyred, Aktaş reported that as a result of the efforts, the perpetrator of the incident was captured wounded in a short time.

Aktaş said, "The untimely passing of our martyr has deeply saddened us all, especially his very precious family. To the precious family of our martyr, I know very well that it is impossible to lessen the pain you are struggling to bear in your hearts today. Our sorrow is deep, our pain is great; may God grant us all patience."

Following the speeches, a moment of silence was observed in front of the martyr's coffin, which was draped in the Turkish flag, and prayers were recited.

The coffin, carried on the shoulders of the honor guard and placed into the vehicle, was sent to his hometown of Sivas to be laid to rest.

Following the funeral prayer to be held at the Ayyıldız Mosque here during the afternoon (ikindi) prayer, Martyr Yılmaz will be laid to rest at the Yukarı Tekke Police Martyrs' Cemetery in Sivas.
