Journalist Metin Göktepe is being commemorated...

Evrensel newspaper reporter Metin Göktepe was detained on January 8, 1996, while covering the funerals of two prisoners who had been killed in prison. After being detained along with nearly 1,000 other people, Göktepe was beaten to death by police officers who said, "special treatment for the journalist."

The Minister of the Interior at the time was Teoman Ünüsan. On January 11, 1996, during the 32. Gün program, Ünüsan stated regarding Göktepe's death: "I do not have full information on the subject. However, the latest information received is that Metin Göktepe died after falling from a wall."

Later, due to public pressure, it had to be admitted that the reporter, who was claimed to have fallen from a wall, had actually been beaten to death in custody.

When the thesis he defended was debunked, the then-Minister of the Interior apologized to Fadime Göktepe, but Göktepe's mother did not accept this apology and demanded that those responsible be put on trial. In the trial, which lasted 4 years and was moved from one city to another, a decision was reached in the hearing held in February 1999, sentencing six of the 11 officers to 7 years and 6 months in prison. This decision, which was later overturned on procedural grounds, was appealed.

On May 5, 1999, the Court of Cassation overturned the verdict against the 5 police chiefs whose sentences had been upheld among the 6 defendants. The police officers, who benefited from conditional release under the amnesty known in the public as the "Rahşan amnesty," served a total of 1 year and 8 months in prison. Metin Göktepe became the first journalist among all those killed in custody up to that date whose killers' crimes were confirmed by a court ruling.
