Major earthquake warning for Istanbul: Critical statement from Japanese expert Moriwaki

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on April 23 in the Sea of Marmara, centered in Silivri, and its aftershocks have unsettled those living in Istanbul.

Experts offer differing views regarding the expected major Istanbul earthquake. While some experts do not expect a larger tremor, others say that Istanbul could face a more significant earthquake.

Japanese Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki stated during a live broadcast on Ekol TV that the earthquake risk in Istanbul persists.

Moriwaki said, 'The recent earthquake was not the major earthquake expected. There is a possibility of a magnitude 7 earthquake occurring within the next two months.'

VIEWS OF LOCAL EXPERTS

Some local experts, however, state that a major tremor is not expected following the recent earthquake and that the public should not panic.

International experts like Moriwaki argue that the next few months are particularly critical for Istanbul and that necessary precautions must be taken.

EVALUATIONS BY PROF. DR. NACİ GÖRÜR

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür also stated during a live broadcast that a major earthquake in the Sea of Marmara is inevitable. Görür said, 'These earthquakes have brought forward the probability of a major earthquake.

'They have deepened and accelerated the stress accumulation area. The Kumburgaz fault has 40, or even 50, kilometers that have not yet broken. The Marmara must break. Let us not deceive ourselves,' he stated.

Emphasizing that scientific truths must be spoken, Görür said, 'I do not want people to die. We have to tell the scientific truths.'
