Naci Görür warns, saying it has been 'silent for many years'... Is there a danger of a magnitude 12 earthquake?

Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür has warned that the Yedisu fault, which starts in Bingöl and continues to Erzincan, could produce a major earthquake.

"The area we are most concerned about is the Yedisu segment, which starts from Bingöl's Karlıova district and continues to Erzincan," said Görür, emphasizing that this fault last produced an earthquake in 1794 and generates an earthquake every 250 years.

Görür stated that they also believe stress has been placed on this fault line following the February 6 earthquakes.

HELLENIC ARC

Görür emphasized that the Hellenic Arc, which concerns the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, could produce a severe earthquake at any moment. Noting that the Hellenic-Cypriot Arc is dangerous, Görür stated, "It passes south of Antalya and Datça. There hasn't been an earthquake there for a long time."

Görür continued as follows:

"Earthquakes occur every day in the south, near Rhodes and Crete. One day, a major earthquake could occur here, just as the Hellenic Arc produced an earthquake of over 9 in 1856. The intensity of the earthquake it produced reached nearly 12. It destroyed Cyprus."

Görür also reminded that a major earthquake is expected in the Marmara region, stating, "We are expecting the truly destructive earthquake on the northern fault line."
