With the arrival of the new year, Belgrade has become one of the few European cities to take this radical measure to prevent traffic congestion on its roads.

Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic stated in an announcement at the end of December, "No one will have to pay for a ticket anymore," noting that the city is following in the footsteps of Luxembourg, the Estonian capital Tallinn, and the French city of Montpellier.

NUMBER OF VEHICLES INCREASED BY 250 THOUSAND IN THE LAST DECADE

Belgrade, which has a population of approximately two million, is struggling with serious traffic congestion problems.

Sapic stated that the number of vehicles in the city has increased by 250 thousand in the last decade and that this situation has made traffic even worse.

Belgrade is one of the few major European capitals that does not have a metro system.

Although a metro system has been promised to be completed by 2030, the project has not yet begun.
