Scandalous testimony in the Newborn Gang trial! 'I would do whatever Fırat said'
The trial of the 58-defendant 'Newborn Gang,' accused of profiting unfairly by referring babies to contracted hospitals and causing their deaths through negligence, has begun in Istanbul. Detained defendant Senanur Ünlü pointed to Fırat Sarı, who is accused of being the gang leader, and said, 'I would do whatever he said.'
The trial of 58 defendants, 30 of whom are in custody, known as the 'Newborn Gang,' who are alleged to have referred infant patients to the neonatal units of private hospitals they had pre-arranged agreements with, causing their deaths and generating illicit profit, has begun at the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court.
The hearing began around 10:15 AM with the roll call. The trial, which started with the identification of the defendants in the consolidated case, continued with the presiding judge reading the documents received by the court. Subsequently, the defense statements of the defendants began.
CHP DELEGATION ATTENDED THE HEARING
Intensive security measures were taken by police teams in the courtroom, which was attended by CHP Deputy Chair Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz and her accompanying delegation, as well as numerous journalists.
"I WOULD DO WHATEVER HE WANTED"
In her defense, detained defendant Senanur Ünlü stated, "I only worked at the hospital for 10 months. I would do whatever Fırat Sarı told me to do. I do not work as a medical secretary. My only duty was to enter documents such as ultrasounds and X-rays into the system in the neonatal unit. I have no medical knowledge regarding epicrisis documents. The only thing I did was upload the results to the system. I had gone on maternity leave. At that time, Hasan Basri Gök said, 'The assistant couldn't keep up with the work, could you help us?' I had already gone to the hospital for a check-up, and at that time, I uploaded the documents to the system. Afterward, Fırat Sarı asked me for an IBAN. The money Fırat Sarı sent me was payment for one day of work. The money in my account activity is related to this," she said.
In accordance with the court panel's decision in the first hearing, some of the defendants who were being tried without arrest—TRG Hospitalist Hospital doctor Mehmet Gürül, TRG Hospitalist Hospital Administrative Manager Murat Mantuş, doctor Şeyhmus Çelik, and Esenler Güney Hospital responsible manager doctor Ali Dirik—had been arrested.
