Hasan Ali Ahlaki, a member of the Iranian Parliament's Cultural Affairs Commission, announced that certain conditions must be met for popular platforms like WhatsApp and Google Play to be reopened for access in his country.

The process for the gradual lifting of the nationwide social media ban was detailed by Iran's Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Ismail Ahlaki.

CONDITIONS OF THE SUPREME COUNCIL OF CYBERSPACE

Minister Ahlaki mentioned the 10 conditions set by the Supreme Council of Cyberspace in Iran, stating that at the forefront of these conditions is the requirement that Iranian authorities must be able to access users' posts.

It was also emphasized that social media platforms would be required to open offices in Iran.

WHATSAPP AND GOOGLE PLAY TO BE REOPENED

It was stated that following the reopening of WhatsApp and Google Play in Iran, other foreign social media platforms could be included in the same process if they accept similar conditions.

Minister Ahlaki announced that these platforms would be granted access once they accept the conditions set in Iran.

WHY WAS THE SOCIAL MEDIA BAN IMPOSED?

The Iranian government frequently bans such platforms as it views them as hubs for protests organized against the state.

The protests that began in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini after she was taken into custody over her headscarf led to the banning of platforms such as WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, as well as VPNs.

REACTIONS TO THE GOOGLE PLAY BAN

The banning of Google Play was particularly criticized by Iranian software developers.

The ban on this platform was intended to encourage the use of domestic software, but this was not welcomed by the public due to security concerns.
