Superbug warning from experts: It could kill 40 million people

A research team composed of microbiology experts from dozens of countries examined 30 years of patient records across 204 countries.

It was determined that deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria have increased by 80 percent in patients over the age of 70.

A study published in The Lancet journal emphasizes that cases of antibiotic-resistant infections will increase by 70 percent over the next 25 years.

This situation means that 39 million people could lose their lives even if all known drugs and antibiotics are used.

It is stated that the bacterium that has developed the most resistance to antibiotics is Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, and that deaths caused by this infection have more than doubled between 1990 and 2021, exceeding 130 thousand.

It is stated that these bacteria, which can lead to serious complications such as "blood poisoning" and even death, especially in intensive care patients, are difficult to eliminate even with the most powerful antibiotics.

It is known that the unnecessary use of antibiotics accelerates the development of bacterial resistance.

Scientists warn that with the strengthening of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, even the simplest infections could become fatal in the future.

As global warming continues, it is noted that microbes frozen for thousands of years within polar ice could be released, raising concerns that the resistant bacteria crisis may become even more serious.
