The story of the Titanic's sinking: Where, when, and how did the Titanic sink?
Known as Titanik in Turkish and by its original name RMS Titanic, it became the most famous ship in history. In this article, we will tell the story of the Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage...
The Titanic is a ship that has gone down in world history. Despite being marketed as the 'unsinkable ship,' its sinking on its maiden voyage, the fact that it was built with the most advanced technology of its time, that it was the largest ship of its era, the high number of casualties, and the way it vividly demonstrated the divide between the rich and the poor made the Titanic the most well-known ship in history.
The Titanic was built between 1909 and 1912. 11 thousand 300 people worked on its construction. The Titanic was a symbol of the luxury and opulence of its time. It had every kind of facility, from restaurants to a swimming pool.
It was also the best of its time in terms of technology. Its hull structure and rivets were produced with the latest technology. It had 16 watertight compartments. The ship would not sink even if 4 of these compartments took on water. That is why it was called the 'unsinkable ship.' Of course, this was a marketing slogan created by the company. There was exaggeration involved. The engineers trusted the ship more, but they never said it was 'unsinkable.'
There were 3 different passenger classes on the Titanic: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class. The wealthiest were in 1st class, and these people had access to every kind of luxury. Those in 2nd class consisted of middle-class people. They did not have access to luxury services, but they were having a comfortable journey. 3rd class, also known as the immigrant class, stayed in rooms with a dormitory system and spent time in limited social areas. It was forbidden for those in 3rd class to pass into the sections of the other classes.
One of the reasons that made the Titanic famous was this class distinction. Even as the ship was sinking, those in 3rd class had difficulty reaching the lifeboats. At first, they were not allowed. When they were allowed, the lack of organization and the fact that that part of the ship was not designed for emergency evacuation would increase the death toll of the people in 3rd class. While 62 percent of the people in 1st class survived, only 25 percent of the people in 3rd class were able to save their lives.
The Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, for its maiden voyage to New York, USA. There were 2 thousand 224 passengers and crew on board. The ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 14, 1912, at 23:39.
It sank 2 hours and 40 minutes after hitting the iceberg. 1514 people lost their lives. Only 32 percent of those on board were rescued. The wreckage of the Titanic on the ocean floor could only be found in 1985, 73 years after it sank.
