What does an oil refinery mean?
An oil refinery (also called a refinery for short) is an industrial processing facility in the petroleum industry where crude oil is refined and subjected to various processes to be converted into useful products such as naphtha, gasoline, diesel fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), asphalt, kerosene, bitumen, tar, fuel oil, petroleum coke, and fuel oil.
Petrochemical raw materials such as ethylene and propylene can also be produced directly through the cracking of crude oil without the need to use crude oil derivatives like naphtha. Crude oil is generally extracted and processed at a petroleum production facility.
There is usually a petroleum storage facility near oil refineries for the storage of incoming crude oil and liquid products.
How Does a Refinery Work? How is crude oil processed?
The crude oil distillation unit (CDU) is the first processing unit in almost all oil refineries.
The CDU distills the incoming crude oil into its various fractions at different boiling ranges, and each is then processed in other units.
Since the CDU operates at slightly above atmospheric pressure, it is generally known as the atmospheric distillation unit.
Crude oil consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons, and the distillation process aims to separate this crude oil into broad categories of component hydrocarbons or “fractions.” The crude oil is first heated and then heated to a temperature of approximately 398°C in a fuel-fired furnace and directed to a distillation column, also known as a still, where different products are boiled and recovered at different temperatures.
Cooling and condensation of the top of the distillation tower are provided partly by heat exchange with the incoming crude oil and partly by an air or water-cooled condenser. Fractions taken from the side of the distillation column at various points between the top and bottom are called side cuts. Each of the side cuts is cooled by heat exchange with the incoming crude oil. All fractions are sent to storage tanks for further processing.
Lighter products such as butane and other liquid petroleum gases (LPG), gasoline blending components, and naphtha are recovered as top distillation products at the lowest temperatures from the distillation column. Mid-range products include jet fuel, kerosene, and other distillates (such as home heating oil and diesel fuel). The remaining heaviest products, such as fuel oil, are sometimes recovered at temperatures above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
