What is brain fog? Can depression and anxiety be linked to brain fog? What are the symptoms of brain fog?
Brain fog is a condition characterized by symptoms such as a loss of mental clarity, difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, and slow thinking. It is often associated with factors such as stress, insufficient sleep, anxiety, or depression. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin shared his insights regarding brain fog. Here are the details...
Brain fog can be defined as a state of mental cloudiness that causes a person to struggle with clarifying their thoughts. This condition typically manifests as difficulty focusing, memory problems, decision-making challenges, and general confusion. Various factors can lead to brain fog; these include stressful life conditions, insufficient sleep, depression, anxiety, and certain chronic illnesses. Brain fog can make a person feel both mentally and emotionally exhausted. If left untreated, it can seriously affect productivity and quality of life. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin explained the symptoms, treatment, and impact of brain fog on life. Here are the highlights...
DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, INSOMNIA, AND DEMENTIA CAN PRESENT SYMPTOMS AS BRAIN FOG!
Stating that people noticing a decline in their mental abilities does not necessarily mean they have a disease, Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said that the condition defined as brain fog is not a disease in a scientific or medical sense. He pointed out that there may be different underlying causes for the complaint of brain fog and said, "Underlying the complaint of brain fog, one often finds diseases such as depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, or early signs of dementia."
Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin provided information about 'brain fog,' a term used to describe impairments in mental functions.
IS BRAIN FOG A SCIENTIFIC DISEASE?
Expressing that brain fog is a term that has started to be heard frequently in popular culture, Metin said, "Brain fog is not a scientific or medical disease. It is more of a name given by the public to a problem they perceive regarding their own mental functions."
Regarding the fact that every person noticing a decline in their own mental ability does not mean it is a disease, Metin explained, "Sometimes people can have very high performance expectations of themselves. In such cases, failing to meet these high performance expectations can be perceived as an ailment. Sometimes, a different underlying condition may be the cause. Therefore, it needs to be investigated. People apply to us with complaints such as 'I cannot concentrate as well as I used to, my mind doesn't work as fast as it used to, my memory isn't as strong as it used to be, I feel as if I haven't woken up from sleep, I feel as if I cannot think clearly,' and these types of complaints define brain fog. When we hear these complaints, we start to consider the underlying causes."
'DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY CAN BE PERCEIVED AS BRAIN FOG'
Touching upon the effect of depression and anxiety on brain fog, the professor stated that these disorders particularly affect the frontal region of the brain and continued:
"We can see this situation in neuroimaging tests. In patients with depression and anxiety, a slowing down is observed in the frontal region of the brain, that is, the frontal lobes. Since the frontal lobes are the regions of the brain related to decision-making and memory, people with depression and anxiety disorders can experience memory impairment in particular. Memory impairment can also be perceived by individuals as brain fog. In other words, people with depression and anxiety disorders may not be able to use their true mental capacity due to the impact on the frontal lobes. For this reason, they may experience a decline in performance in their daily lives."
IS FREQUENT DREAMING LINKED TO BRAIN FOG?
As for the question of whether frequent dreaming is linked to brain fog, he said: "Frequent dreaming actually indicates that sleep quality is poor. In fact, we dream every night; remembering our dreams means our sleep is interrupted, and because we wake up during those interruptions, we record the dream into memory. People who dream frequently usually have low sleep quality. The cause of this situation could be sleep apnea, depression, or a different ailment. All of these are conditions linked to brain fog." He also emphasized that brain fog is not a vision impairment and that one should not think of a condition like blurred vision when the term 'brain fog' is used.
TREATMENT OF BRAIN FOG DEPENDS ON TREATING THE UNDERLYING CAUSE
Reiterating that the underlying disease must be found for the treatment of brain fog, Metin said, "When patients with complaints of brain fog apply to specialist physicians, the physicians can mostly understand the underlying cause. Most of the time, diseases such as depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, or early signs of dementia emerge from under the complaint of brain fog. Once the underlying disease is identified, it is necessary to plan a personalized treatment for that disease."
Metin, who also offered suggestions to prevent the complaint of brain fog, concluded his words as follows:
"Regular sleep is very important. If there is a sleep disorder problem, it must be treated. If any vitamin deficiency is detected, a treatment should be planned accordingly. Regular exercise should be done without exhausting the body. Stress is a part of our lives; a stress-free life is not possible. However, one should avoid excessive stress. If you have intense anxiety, if you feel as if you are not enjoying anything, you should seek support from a specialist. These types of ailments also affect mental capacity."
