Who is former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica? Did he die, and what was his health issue?

Uruguay's legendary leader Jose Mujica (Pepe) had refused treatment after his cancer spread and shared his final wish with the public.

Known for his simple life, Mujica had stated that he wanted to be buried under the sequoia tree on the farm where he spent his life, next to his beloved dog, Manuela.

One of Latin America's most inspiring figures and a beloved leader of the people, former Uruguayan President Jose 'Pepe' Mujica, has passed away at the age of 89.

WHO IS JOSE MUJICA?

Jose Mujica was born on May 20, 1935, in Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1960, he joined the Tupamaros, an armed leftist guerrilla organization.

Following the military coup in the country in 1973, he was captured and imprisoned. After spending many years in prison, he regained his freedom with the general amnesty law enacted in 1985.

After his release, he founded the Movement of Popular Participation (MPP) along with some former organization members. In 2004, he served as the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries. In the elections held on November 29, 2009, he was elected President of Uruguay.

On the other hand, Mujica, who was known for donating 90% of his monthly salary of approximately 12 thousand dollars to charity, was also recognized as the "world's most humble president."
