Protesters occupy Trump skyscraper: 98 people detained
In New York, a group demanding the release of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil held a sit-in protest in front of Trump Tower. 98 people were detained during the demonstration, which was organized by the Jewish non-governmental organization Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).
The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced in a statement regarding the protest that participants who were reacting to the arrest of Khalil, who led the protests at Columbia University, had been taken into custody.
The statement noted that the protesters are facing charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. Police stated that all protesters had been removed from the building.
During the protest, the group, wearing red t-shirts with the words "Stop arming Israel" and carrying banners reading "Bring Mahmoud home now," chanted slogans such as "Fight Nazis, not students."
The demonstrators demanded the immediate release of Khalil.
Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student at Columbia University, was detained on March 3 while heading home with his wife.
Khalil's attorney, Amy Greer, stated that despite her client being a "green card holder with permanent residency" and his wife being an American citizen, he was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and his green card was revoked.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the following in a post on the social media platform X:
"We will revoke the visas or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported."
It was reported that a judge has temporarily blocked Khalil's deportation.
