TasteAtlas recently announced its list of the 100 worst foods in the world for 2023. Recognized as one of the prestigious platforms in the gastronomy world, TasteAtlas evaluated various dishes from global cuisines to select the 100 worst foods in the world.

Kale soup, a staple of Black Sea cuisine, ranked 7th among the 100 worst foods. The inclusion of kale soup among the worst foods sparked reactions in the Black Sea Region. While events were organized in many cities to promote and defend kale soup, demand also increased for the kale that was sold for 5 liras per bunch in the market until yesterday. The price of kale, which was sold for 5 liras per bunch in the market before the news broke, has doubled to 10 liras due to the increase in sales.

"KALE BECAME A HOT TOPIC, SALES INCREASED"

İslam Seyis, who sells kale at the market established in the Pazarkapı neighborhood of the Ortahisar district, emphasized that kale soup is an indispensable delicacy of kitchens, stating, "It turned out better for us. Kale became a hot topic and sales increased. According to whom and what is its taste? Soup and stuffed leaves (sarma) are indispensable parts of our cuisine. There was an intense reaction. Currently, a bunch is sold for 10 liras. It can be used for stuffing, for cooking, for everything. There was demand for kale when the weather was cold, but after this incident, demand started to increase even more. Sales have increased."

Asiye Bıyıklı, who has been selling the kale she grows in her garden for 20 years by coming to the market, expressed that kale is famous, saying, "The dish of the Black Sea Region is kale soup. This is our own labor; we grow it in our field. We miss kale soup because we work at the market. People buy a lot of kale."

Market vendor Gülten Terzi also stated, "This kale doesn't grow everywhere. It is the most wonderful dish. It rivals meat. We stand behind our kale. Sales are good these days. People from other regions don't know kale. To us, it is a very wonderful dish. They come and buy it by the bagful."

Nadire İleli noted that kale is the best food in the world, saying, "It is healthy. Can you stand on your feet without eating kale? The Black Sea's kale is famous. It used to go for 5 liras a bunch, but now it has started to be sold for 10 liras. Demand has started to increase. It is selling more. Kale is the most sought-after item in the market."

On the other hand, Ruhşen Uçkun, who tasted the kale soup distributed at an event held on Kahramanmaraş Street, one of the busiest spots in Trabzon, said, "Kale soup reminds us of our childhood. This is a dish we cannot give up. It acts like an aspirin. Their evaluation does not concern us. Those who do not know its taste might evaluate it that way," while Kadir Çiçekci, who came to visit Trabzon from Kahramanmaraş, stated, "Kale soup is very good. I liked it very much. I can truly say it is a vitamin storehouse."

Hatice Şahin expressed her reaction to kale soup being shown among the worst foods, stating, "It was ranked this way because the chef couldn't make it right. I have a certificate in regional dishes. There are several varieties of our kale. We don't know how they made it, but they must not have made it delicious. We are reacting to this situation."
