2 million people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year!

President of the Turkish Association for Cancer Research and Control, Prof. Dr. Tezer Kutluk, announced that an average of 2 million people worldwide and 41,000 people in Turkey are diagnosed with lung cancer annually. During a press conference held as part of World Cancer Day on February 4, Prof. Dr. Kutluk stated that the main theme for this year is "close the care gap in cancer, move further in cancer care."

Emphasizing that an average of 20 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer each year and 10 million lose their lives due to it, Kutluk stated that in Turkey, there are more than 230,000 adult cancer cases and around 3,000 to 4,000 childhood cancer cases annually. Kutluk noted that approximately 4 million cancer-related deaths could be prevented through measures that can be taken, early diagnosis, and screening efforts.

Stating that lung cancer is one of the primary consequences of tobacco and tobacco product use, Prof. Dr. Kutluk said that there are approximately 2 million lung cancer cases worldwide annually, followed by approximately 2 million breast cancer cases. Noting that the situation is similar in Turkey, Kutluk stated that there are an average of 41,000 lung cancer and 24,000 breast cancer cases in the country each year.

Kutluk emphasized that it is possible to prevent 30 to 50 percent of cancers through basic methods such as avoiding tobacco products, healthy nutrition, and regular physical activity, and touched upon the importance of countries investing in cancer prevention while simultaneously managing the treatment process. Furthermore, he said that with new treatment methods, the chance of survival has reached 70 percent in adult cancers and 80 percent in childhood cancers. He drew attention to the importance of increasing screening rates for breast and colon cancer, including the HPV vaccine, which provides protection against cervical cancer, in the National Vaccination Program, and supporting and developing clinical studies.
