A new benefit added to the list for Viagra

A study conducted in the UK has revealed that the risk of Alzheimer's is reduced in men who use Viagra and similar erectile dysfunction medications.

Scientists from University College London examined prescription records of more than 260,000 men experiencing erectile dysfunction.

In the study, men who used Viagra were compared with those who did not.

According to a report by BBC Turkish, this five-year study found 8.1 cases of dementia for every 10,000 men who used the drug, compared to 9.7 cases among those who did not.

Accordingly, it was determined that the likelihood of developing dementia was 18 percent lower in men taking these medications.

Experts state that more tests are required to prove the direct effect of the drug.

ORIGINALLY DESIGNED AS A BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEART MEDICATION

Viagra was originally designed as a high blood pressure and heart medication because it increases blood circulation. However, doctors later discovered that it was effective throughout the body, including the blood vessels in the penis.

Previous experiments on animals had shown that the drug has a protective effect on brain cells. The scientists who conducted the latest research state that they will work to determine whether the reduction in Alzheimer's cases is directly linked to the drug.

Dr. Ruth Brauer, one of the directors of the research published in the journal Neurology, says that more research is needed to confirm the findings.

Scientists say they also want to investigate whether the drug might have a similar effect on women.
