Beware of gum problems during menopause! What to do to protect oral health

Experts state that women's oral and dental health is at greater risk in the postmenopausal period, noting that the primary cause of this is hormonal changes. In particular, the decrease in estrogen levels can lead to an increase in gum problems, dry mouth, and tooth decay. While emphasizing the importance of paying attention to oral hygiene during this period, experts also note that regular dental check-ups play a major role.

Beware of gum problems during menopause! What to do to protect oral health

Experts state that women's oral and dental health is under greater threat in the postmenopausal period, noting that the primary cause of this is hormonal changes. In particular, the decrease in estrogen levels can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, and dry mouth. Periodontology Specialist Dr. Kübra Karaduran warned, "Because saliva helps prevent cavities by cleaning the teeth, dry mouth during this period can cause tooth decay to develop more rapidly." Stating that it is extremely important to pay attention to oral hygiene during this period, Dr. Karaduran emphasized that in addition to regular dental check-ups, gum diseases that increase during the menopause process can have negative effects not only on oral health but also on general health.

Pointing out that postmenopausal hormonal changes can affect dental health, the expert stated that significant changes in oral health can occur, especially with the decrease in estrogen levels.

Expressing that a drop in estrogen levels can negatively affect the health of the gums, the expert said, "It can cause an increase in complaints of gum inflammation, bleeding, swelling, and sensitivity. Furthermore, the decrease in estrogen levels can lead to dry mouth by reducing saliva production. Since saliva helps prevent cavities by cleaning the teeth, tooth decay due to dry mouth can occur more easily during this period."

PAYING ATTENTION TO ORAL HYGIENE IS VERY IMPORTANT IN THE POSTMENOPAUSAL PERIOD!

Emphasizing that visiting the dentist regularly in the postmenopausal period is very important for the early detection and treatment of problems, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Kübra Karaduran said the following:

“Thus, conditions such as gum disease, cavities, and dry mouth can be detected early. For those experiencing dry mouth, moisturizing oral sprays or sugar-free gums may be recommended. Additionally, drinking plenty of water can reduce dry mouth. Products that increase saliva production or artificial saliva preparations used as a substitute for saliva can also be beneficial.

Paying attention to oral hygiene is very important during this period. The use of fluoride toothpaste is effective in preventing the formation of tooth decay. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and dental floss helps remove plaque and prevents gum disease. Limiting habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption in the postmenopausal period can improve oral health because these habits increase the risk of gum disease, dry mouth, and tooth decay.”

INCREASED GUM PROBLEMS AFTER MENOPAUSE CAN ALSO AFFECT GENERAL HEALTH!

Emphasizing that the risk of osteoporosis increases in women after menopause, the expert said, "Osteoporosis can lead to a decrease in bone density, causing the jawbone to weaken. A weakened jawbone can disrupt the supporting structure of the teeth and lead to tooth loss."

Furthermore, pointing out that gum diseases may increase after menopause, the expert stated that these diseases can have negative effects not only on oral health but also on general health. "Gum diseases can also be associated with many other health problems such as heart disease and diabetes," she said, emphasizing that one should be careful about this issue.
