A legendary figure in the medical world, Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil, who was honored with the title of "Neurosurgeon of the Century," has passed away at the age of 99.

The sad news was shared with the public by Minister of Health Kemal Memişoğlu.

In a statement on his X account, Memişoğlu noted the following:

"I learned with great sadness of the passing of our professor, Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil, who was named the 'Neurosurgeon of the Century' for his unique work in his field.

In a life spanning nearly a century dedicated to science, he achieved many things that serve as an example for us all.

We will do our best to keep his memory alive. May he rest in peace and may his place be in heaven."

WHO IS GAZİ YAŞARGİL?

Born in 1925 in the Lice district of Diyarbakır, Prof. Dr. Yaşargil pursued his education in Germany and Switzerland. With his groundbreaking work at the University of Zurich, he revolutionized the field, particularly in microscopic neurosurgery. By developing microscopic surgery for aneurysm, epilepsy, and brain tumor operations, he brought a new breath of life to neurosurgery.

Serving as the head of the Neurosurgery Department at the University of Zurich between 1973 and 1993, Yaşargil mentored more than 3,000 surgeons from different parts of the world during this period. After his retirement, Yaşargil continued his work at the University of Arkansas in the USA, before returning to Turkey in 2014 to contribute to the training of young surgeons at Yeditepe University.

Scientific Legacy and International Respect

Yaşargil's contributions were not limited to surgical interventions. He established the theoretical foundation of microneurosurgery with more than 330 academic articles and his six-volume "Microneurosurgery" series. Declared the "Neurosurgeon of the Century" by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in 1999, Yaşargil was honored with the Republic of Turkey State Medal of Distinguished Service a year later.

Yaşargil's name was also immortalized by being given to a training and research hospital in his hometown of Diyarbakır.

Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil will continue to be remembered as a pioneering figure in the field of neurosurgery, both in Turkey and around the world.
