Cheap sunglasses can cause permanent eye damage!

Stating that the effects of sunlight are being felt more as the summer months approach, Ophthalmology and Eye Health Specialist Op. Dr. Ömer Faruk Tabar warned, "In this period when the need for protection from the sun increases, the choice of sunglasses gains great importance. Experts draw attention to the harms of low-quality glasses. Counterfeit sunglasses, whose materials and chemical contents are unknown, can cause permanent damage to eye health. While cataracts usually appear after the age of 60, they can occur in the 40s in those who do not use sunglasses."

Warning that glasses purchased cheaply and made of low-quality glass or plastic should definitely not be used, Op. Dr. Ömer Faruk Tabar noted that eye health should be considered first when choosing glasses, which are often produced in various colors and sizes for aesthetic purposes.

Stating that not choosing appropriate sunglasses leads to serious problems in the long term, Op. Dr. Faruk Tabar said, "As a result of the depletion of the ozone layer, it is necessary to use glasses to protect against the negative effects of ultraviolet rays, which are known to be harmful to the eyes. Dark-colored lenses cause our pupils to dilate. If they do not block ultraviolet rays, they cause more damage to the eye."

Pointing out that many people who do not have the habit of using sunglasses face the risk of developing cataracts, Op. Dr. Tabar said, "Sunlight, which is a significant factor in the formation of cataracts, can cause cataracts that appear at age 60-70 to occur in the 40s in those who do not use sunglasses. Especially those who are exposed to sunlight for long periods should not neglect to use sunglasses. We need to use sunglasses as a health tool to protect our eye health."
