Common stomach diseases in employees

"Gastroesophageal reflux," which manifests itself with stomach acid escaping into the esophagus (a sour taste in the mouth), is a very common condition.

Approximately 3-4 out of every 10 people experience this problem. Weight and inactivity, when combined with poor nutrition, facilitate the development of reflux. Smoking, alcohol, and the caffeine and carbonated drinks frequently consumed by employees also increase the risk.

Apart from this, reflux can also occur in a group of patients without any discomfort or symptoms. In these cases, a diagnosis of reflux can be made using a system called pH monitoring, which precisely measures the backflow of stomach acid.

HOW IS IT TREATED?

Reflux patients are primarily advised to lose weight, not to lie down after eating, to stay away from fatty and fried foods, and to avoid consuming alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, and carbonated drinks. Then, drug treatment is started. If a positive response is obtained with medication, a lifelong treatment plan is then scheduled, such as maintenance therapy or taking medication as needed.

In a group of patients who do not respond to treatment, other causes that may lead to reflux are investigated. Depending on the increase in reflux, surgical methods may be resorted to.

Surgical operations can be performed on individuals who do not want to take medication continuously, who cannot lose weight, who cannot comply with recommendations such as staying away from alcohol, cigarettes, and caffeine, or on some patients who prefer surgery because they have difficulty with compliance.

STOMACH CANCER RISK

Faulty dietary habits, smoking and alcohol use, a sedentary lifestyle, and obesity constitute risk factors for stomach cancers. Another factor that increases the risk in stomach cancers is age. Therefore, as age increases, it becomes a value taken into consideration by experts.

If the person is over 45 years old and has vomiting, weight loss, loss of appetite, or very severe pain, stomach cancer is one of the possibilities that should not be overlooked. In addition to this, a history of cancer in the patient's family or having any type of cancer oneself serves as an alarm for the disease.

In the past, surgeries where nearly two-thirds of the stomach was removed were performed for ulcer-related bleeding, non-healing ulcers, stomach narrowing, and perforation. With the discovery of a bacterium called "Helicobacter pylori," which is largely responsible for the formation of these diseases, and the development of acid-suppressing drugs, there is now almost no need for surgery. Except for emergency bleeding and cancer, these operations are no longer performed.

THE POOR NUTRITION DETAIL

Weight problems caused by a lack of movement are generally seen in office workers. Some of these are listed as fatty liver, reflux disease, and obesity. With the increase in unhealthy eating habits, these diseases are encountered more frequently today.

Burning in the upper part of the stomach and the stomach region, indigestion, a bitter taste in the mouth, and bloating are quite common today. These complaints may indicate reflux, but complaints such as burning and pain radiating to the back may be caused by ulcers.

Ulcers occur as a result of the disruption of the integrity of the layer lining the inner surface of the stomach. Untreated ulcers can lead to bleeding, narrowing, and rarely, perforation. Apart from this, sometimes complaints can also stem from indigestion due to the medications used, the inability to fully digest food, and the feeling of tension experienced in the stomach.
