The study, which utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) analysis of mortality rates and life expectancy in 195 countries between 1950 and 2021, as well as surveys, censuses, and other sources, focused specifically on the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The research, conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, found that global life expectancy decreased by more than 1.5 years between 2019 and 2021, sharply reversing previous gains.

Dr. Austin E. Schumacher, one of the researchers at the IHME, stated that the COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on adults worldwide, noting, "During the pandemic, life expectancy declined in 84 percent of countries and territories. This demonstrates the potential devastating effects of novel pathogens."
Life expectancy is a statistical measure that indicates how long a person is expected to live on average.
The details of the study were published in the journal "The Lancet".
