Critical warnings from an expert! Vitamin D deficiency can lead to pregnancy loss

Obstetrician and Gynecologist Op. Dr. Nigar Allahverdiyeva made statements regarding recurrent pregnancy losses.

Stating that pregnancy loss is a common occurrence in the early stages of pregnancy, Op. Dr. Allahverdiyeva said, “However, in couples who have experienced 2 or more miscarriages before the 20th week of pregnancy, the causes of recurrent pregnancy loss must be investigated. Recurrent pregnancy losses can occur for various reasons. Among the most common causes are chromosomal anomalies, genetic anomalies, clotting disorders, advanced maternal age, and structural anomalies of the uterus. Apart from these, low egg and sperm quality, hormonal imbalances, immune system diseases, metabolic diseases (especially diabetes and thyroid), environmental factors, previous surgeries related to the uterus, and the use of cigarettes and alcohol can cause recurrent pregnancy losses.”

''DETAILED GYNECOLOGICAL EXAMINATION IS PERFORMED''

Stating that the causes of pregnancy losses are investigated through a detailed screening, Op. Dr. Allahverdiyeva said, “The investigation of the causes begins with taking a detailed history; the week in which the miscarriages occurred, whether surgical intervention was required, any known chronic illnesses of both the mother and father-to-be, the medications they use, nutritional habits, cigarette and alcohol use, and family histories are questioned. A detailed gynecological examination is performed for the expectant mother. A spermogram test is requested from the father-to-be. To evaluate genetic anomalies, a chromosome analysis of the mother and father-to-be is performed, meaning a peripheral karyotype test is checked. If there is miscarriage material, it is genetically examined. To detect clotting disorders, a thrombophilia panel examination of the expectant mother is performed. To detect structural anomalies of the uterus or adhesions due to surgery and infections, a uterine film (HSG) and, if necessary, an MRI are taken. To investigate metabolic diseases, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, TSH, prolactin, and hormone values such as FSH, LH, and Estradiol for hormonal disorders are checked. To evaluate the immune system, a number of blood tests also need to be performed,” she stated.

''HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IS IMPORTANT''

Drawing attention to the importance of a healthy lifestyle for couples, Op. Dr. Allahverdiyeva shared the following information:
“Apart from the methods I have listed, one of the points that couples should know is the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It has been shown that excess weight, stress, vitamin D deficiency, and the use of cigarettes and alcohol cause recurrent miscarriages. After the cause of the recurrent pregnancy losses is found, appropriate medical or surgical treatments are started. In couples with chromosomal or genetic anomalies, further evaluation is performed, and if necessary, PGT, i.e., preimplantation genetic diagnosis testing, is requested. In couples experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss, a cause-oriented approach is required when planning treatment. It is possible to achieve a successful pregnancy with the appropriate form of treatment.”
