Freckles, the most common type of spot problem, are a genetic issue. While they fade enough to disappear in winter, they appear as 1-3 mm spots on the face, nose, and cheeks in summer with sun exposure. They emerge mostly due to genetic factors. Skin spotting is seen very frequently, especially in people with fair skin.

Pregnancy spots, called melasma, are discolorations that can emerge mostly due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. Because it is a hormonal change, using a pregnancy-safe sunscreen when going out during the pregnancy process will help in prevention.

Specialist Dr. Serpil Uysal from the Dermatology Department at Istanbul Okan University Hospital made important statements regarding skin spots.

Stating that skin spots can also be frequently seen in patients with thyroid issues, adrenal gland diseases, and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, Uysal said, "Skin spots can be seen in individuals using birth control pills. It is not just hormonal reasons; incorrect use of cosmetics is another reason that leads to spot formation."

How are skin spots diagnosed: Wood's Lamp Examination

In skin spots, it is necessary to distinguish well whether it is a pigment spot or a discoloration caused by another condition. The Wood's lamp examination, also called purple light, is a method used to measure the depth of the spot in both skin lightness and darkness.

The basis of treatment for skin spots: Sunscreen

The earlier skin spot treatment is started, the more effective it will be. Existing spots will become more permanent under the influence of sunlight. Spot treatments vary according to age group and underlying causes. The foundation of treatment is using a sunscreen suitable for one's skin type in both summer and winter months.

It is appropriate to use sunscreens 20 minutes before going out in the sun and to reapply them every 4 hours.

Topically used cosmetic creams contain kojic acid, arbutin, AHAs and BHAs, and hydroquinones.

Exfoliating products should be used mostly at night.

It is recommended that those who work in front of monitors and those exposed to fluorescent lights use sunscreen even indoors.

Apart from creams, methods such as peeling, mesotherapy, PRP, and laser treatments are other systems used.
