Drug addict's neck could no longer support their head

In the city of Isfahan, Iran, a health issue experienced by a 23-year-old drug addict has highlighted the lesser-known effects of drug use. The young person, who was treated at Al-Zahra Hospital, faced a condition known as dropped head syndrome. Due to severe deformation in their neck, they were unable to hold their head upright.

Doctors stated that the patient's combined use of drugs such as amphetamines, opium, and heroin led to this condition. CT scans revealed a significant kyphotic curvature in the neck region. While this condition is usually associated with motor neuron disorders, this case demonstrated that drug use can also be a trigger.

Dr. Majid Rezvani stated that while drugs do not have a direct effect on the musculoskeletal system, individuals under the influence of substances remaining in a fixed position for long periods can lead to permanent deformities in the spine. This case has once again brought the unexpected and serious consequences of drug use to the agenda.
