Drug developed from spider venom against heart attacks: Human trials have begun
Researchers from the University of Queensland stated that the "Hi1a" peptide found in the venom of funnel-web spiders could be an effective treatment against heart attacks. The research team has received 12 million dollars in funding to proceed to clinical trials for this new drug.
Led by researchers from Australia's University of Queensland, it has been stated that clinical trials on humans will begin for a drug developed from the venom of funnel-web spiders, which is believed to be a treatment for heart attacks.
A statement regarding the drug, developed thanks to the funnel-web spider, one of the world's most venomous arthropods, was made on the University of Queensland's website.
Researchers reported that the peptide found in the spider, known as "Hi1a," is believed to be capable of both preventing damage during a heart attack and protecting a transplanted heart.
It was noted that thanks to approximately 12 million dollars in funding from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), the drug will move to clinical trials for testing on humans.
Stating that the clinical trials, which will last approximately 4 years, will measure the drug's potential, the researchers said, "If successful, the drug will not only increase patients' chances of survival and quality of life but will also significantly reduce healthcare costs."
